Nik Software - New Color Efex Pro 4 Full
Version Free Download
Can I get Nik Collection Download for Lifetime Free?
Recently I have been getting a lot of emails asking if I can still get the Nik Collection for free download. The simple answer to this is that yes you can still get free download of Nik collection. Later in this article, I will explain how to do it officially, but there are some pitfalls and background issues that you need to understand.
A Brief History of the Nik Collection
The Nik collection was originally developed by Nik Software. This was a private software company with its roots in Germany and America. Interestingly, Nikon has a stake in Nik which is why so many new Nik Collection features (like Point Control) also appear in the Nikon Capture NX software. There is a short page covering this in Wikipedia.
For a long time, Nik's collection was a market leader and a favorite of professional photographers. It was easy (and easy to use) and can help you add great enhancements to your photos.
Initially, they continued with developers and quickly released Nik Analog Efex. Shortly after following the Nik Analog Efex 2 added some features. Similarly, Google has reduced the price of software, making it more affordable for the photographer. Later they went ahead, made the software free and paid off refunds to many who had purchased it.
But by the end of 2016 Google appeared to be stopping all development and bug fixes. Then in 2017 they officially announced that there would be no more release of the Nik collection. Luckily, there was a Nik collection line where DxO buys goods from Google.
Nik Collection 2012 and 2018
Following the purchase of the Nik collection from Google, DxO has begun to improve. The most important thing for them was to fix any major bugs in the Nik Collection software and to ensure that the software uses the latest coding libraries. During this time, some Nik Collection users reported durability issues when upgrading Photoshop, Lightroom and their computer applications.
In June 2018, DxO released their first new version of Nik Collection called Nik Collection 2018. At the same time, they named the old Google "Nik Collection 2012". I suspect it's because Google bought the software in 2012, but it makes it look a lot older than the last build Google made.
There was bad news for Nik fans now who needed to pay for upgrades (as you might expect). But the upgrade was almost identical to the previous version of Google. While I was publishing this video on YouTube I was giving my own development test.
I have tried this myself and it works (since April 2019).
Important issues with Nik's free collection
Nik's first collection always had a few bugs and a few came in during Google's ownership. I will save you a lesson on software development and why I think this happened. What this means is that some features such as Brush Selection in Selection Tool are not applicable.
You may also find that in your installation trying to unlock the Nik tool from the Selection Tool will crash Photoshop. If you find this, just access Nik's tools from the Photoshop Filters menu. When you use Lightroom, it seems to behave a little better. DxO solved these problems, and many more, in the Nik Collection 2018. I upgraded in June 2018 and the software, which I use every day, did not work once on my Mac or Windows PC. I have also found a few software versions that deal with most bugs.
If you find that you like the Nik collection but the bugs create a lot of problems, it’s worth the price for improvement. There is also a free 30-day trial of the Nik collection that you can download. Be aware however, if you install a new trial version of the software it will automatically remove the old version from your computer. If you want to get back to the old Nik Collection 2012 after the trial, you will need to install it again.
